How to Take Down Twists for the Perfect Twist Out

Step 1: Untwist each Twist

First apply oil to your hands, I use coconut oil. Then while my hands are oiled I untwist my hair by twisting the twist in the opposite direction until I reach the end of the twist. Untwisting this way is the best way to get a perfect twist out because it minimizes fuzzy curls.

Step 2: Separate each section of hair

This can step can be combined with step one once you get used to doing it. Once all the twists are untwisted, for each section of hair that you have you are going to separate by stretching the section downward and pulling apart the hair where each curl naturally separates.

Step 3: Pick your hair for volume

Once you have separated to your desired volume, you will use a hair pick to lift only at the roots. This will keep your hair from looking stiff and hide the parts from your twists. You also use it to shape how you want your hair to look. The more you tease the more volume you will have. I keep this minimal at first because I like my hair to loosen over time. Do not comb all the way through this will mess up your curls!

Step 4: Bobby pin to shape

This step is optional, but I like to do it because it keeps certain hair in place so that I keep the shape and style that I want throughout the day. My hair shrinks up a lot so the bobby pins help. I usually put a pin in the front sides of my hair and if I want a bang on both sides of the bang. I put the pins where I can hide them under other pieces of my hair.
